(2025) Hyoscyamus Aureus 20+ seeds
Hyoscyamus aureus, or Golden Henbane, is a rarely offered and most geographically restricted members of the Hyoscyamus genus. Native to the rocky hillsides of the Middle East — particularly Israel, Jordan, and parts of Syria — this species is recognized by its bright yellow-golden flowers, often tinged with dark violet veins, and its compact, hairy rosette growth.
Unlike the more well-known H. niger, which grows tall and unruly, H. aureus stays low to the ground, forming thick basal rosettes and later producing upright flowering spikes. The leaves are softly woolly, almost silvered in strong sun, and emit the same pungent scent characteristic of the genus. Blooms are usually seen in early spring to midsummer depending on conditions, each flower lasting only a few days.
In cultivation, it requires dry, well-draining soil, cool to warm temperatures, and intense light. It struggles in high humidity and damp environments, making it better suited for dry climates or containers in controlled conditions. Like all henbanes, it is highly toxic, and consumption or misuse can result in serious harm or death.
